Object:

Delftware ‘Herring plate’

Scroll

Object: A series of Chinese blue and white porcelain plates.

Condition: the plate shown in the pictures had some breaks and some very discoloured old glue

Suggested treatment: themplate has only been cleaned and bonded. My advise to the owners was to keep it simple, the plate did not need any fills or retouching.

Condition: the plate was very dirty, all around the edges the missing chips due to fritting ( a common form of degradation in Delftware) were very dark with dirt-buildups. Also; the tail of the fish was gone and some old restorations in the same area had yellowed.

Suggested treatment: all parts were cleaned before a fill of the tail was made. The fill was retouched so that it gave a natural look to the whole. For the plate’s future setting the restorations did not need to be invisible but neither did we want the restoration to draw any unwanted attention.
